Inside the Made In Chelsea cast's lavish stay in Canada

Last autumn, the stars of Made In Chelsea were whisked away to yet another lavish destination to tackle the dramas usually weighing them down in West London.

And although Olivia Bentley found herself in hot water with resident Lothario James Taylor, while Sophie Habboo and Emily Blackwell debated what to do with problem-housemate Miles Nazaire, none of it really mattered given that it played out against the scenic smorgasbord that is British Columbia, Canada.

The cast were jetted into Vancouver for a lavish one-nighter at boutique hotspot The Wedgewood – a home-away-from-home for the Chelsea set who are more than accustomed to the mahogany and Clos Rougeard of Trinity Square and The Conduit.

The Wedgewood falls under the category of ’boutique’ hotel; and while this can often mean ‘small’, it more often than not means ‘swish’.

At this hotel you’ll find an old-school classiness plonked amid the modernity of Downtown Vancouver which is widely regarded as the place to stay.

Inside The Wedgewood you’ll find a variety of accommodations, from the Executive Queen Guest Suites to the various Penthouse rooms on the 12th and 14th floors.

This is the only Vancouver hotel that is a member of the prestige Relais & Chateaux – a collection of the world’s finest hotels and restaurants – with each of the 83 rooms boasting walk-out balconies, uber-comfortable bedding and L’Occitane bath amenities.

There’s even a limousine and a concierge service, should you require it.

The Made In Chelsea stars were then jetted off to Vancouver Island – the city’s sisterly islet offering, literally, much greener pastures. The cast were sent over in a private seaplane, but there’s a cost-effective mode of travel to the island, which allows more time to drink in the surrounds of the region.

Board one of Vancouver’s departing ferries and head off on a two-hour sail across the Strait of Georgia before embarking on a three-hour haul up Vancouver Island.

Those put off by a hefty drive to the North-West tip of the archipelago shouldn’t be. It’s impossible not to be mesmerised by every inch of scenery that lines the road as it stretches diagonally across the peninsula like a basking Lynx.

En route you’ll find Cathedral Grove – a forest of 1000-year-old redwood trees. Cathedral Grove is named so romantically you’d be forgiven for wondering whether Marquis de Sade spent time sitting beneath them penning his latest masterpiece.

But Sade, Poe and Wilde were merely twinkles in history’s eye when these majestic trees took root. Cathedral Grove is a site of enchanting natal archaeology; the cedars and firs are totems of an Indigenous time, nestled within the heart of Vancouver Island.

Tofino – the destination – is located at the top of the Island, on the Pacific Rim.

Most likely considered a convenience to the younger flurry of surfer-types that flock there, it’s as far away from city life as you can get on Vancouver Island. The result: a subsystem of coolness, on the brink of the swells of the coast.

Last autumn, the Chelsea crew were welcomed to Pacific Sands Resort in Tofino – far enough out of the small town to be idyllic and serene, yet close enough to visit the various eateries and bars that pepper the region: The Wolf In The Fog, Shelter, 1909 Kitchen – where you’ll find a heady mixture of young vibrant waiters, waitresses, chefs and bartenders, salt-licked from their days off at the beach; and a sea of local cuisine and booze that will knock you back to the Rockies.

The lodge features a rustic stone fireplace – as do the corresponding apartments also provided at the resort – which is activated by the flick of a switch, ready to up the coziness as soon as you want to curl up in front of the view and watch the sun rise, set, or disappear entirely to make way for rolling clouds, sheet rain and crashing storms.

The resort is on the beach, where surfing is most definitely the thing to do. As seen on Made In Chelsea, donning a wet-suit and frolicking in the spume is a barrel of laughs, whether you’re a dab-hand or a novice.

And it doesn’t matter what time of year it is with Pacific Sands’ Surf Sister staff (and dog) on hand to help you navigate the freezing waters. Hold off til April and you may even spy a whale!

Pacific Sands offers an array of accommodations. It caters to the MIC-style group of young pals looking for fires, frisson and fondue, but also to families.

If you want to connect with nature, you’re spoiled for choice given that Tofino is in the Pacific Rim National Park. You’ll find an array of tracks that cover all terrains: within one day you can experience the ocean, the beach, rain forests, lakes, cliffs and bogs.

The latter takes you along a wooden boardwalk trail, via an 0.8-kilometre hiking loop, around an ecosystem unique to the Pacific Rim. This area only allows a few species of plant and tree to survive thanks to the acidic soil found in the region, including the craggy shore pine and 400-year-old Sphagnum moss.

But boggy moss and bear-inhabited forests aside, hang up your yellow slicker, shower and change, and head to Tofino for dinner and drinks.

The Wolf In The Fog is particularly enticing with its rustic décor (including a gnarled, driftwood wolf) and its sumptuous cocktail selection. Treat yourself to a Cedar Sour, a Captain Whisk or a Sea Wench, before tucking into gooseneck barnacles, lamb carbonara or a chocolate-injected Tofino Blackout.

Around the block is Shelter – boasting fire pits and plenty more specialties from the world of drink. It’s vibrant here; a Friday night steak with truffle French fries and a mound of rocket will see you into the weekend, as will the staff who are more than happy to recommend what to do as well as what to eat during your stay.

1909 Kitchen overlooks the marina, and is a sight to behold as the sun goes down – whatever the season. Be it a glassy springtime sunset or an autumnal reddish mass, this backdrop to your supper proves a quaint accompaniment to the rock-salted new potatoes you might enjoy for starters, and succulent chicken and local greens on offer as your entrée.

Next door to this is The Hatch – a waterfront pub and a fondly-revered Tofino institution, on the brink of the town’s inlet harbour, buzzing with the after-dinner crowd.

After their stay in Tofino, the Made In Chelsea cast were whisked back to Downtown Vancouver once more, to enjoy a final taste of city life.
