Inside the Kent hotel named as one of the best in the world

Just under a two hours from London, The Pig hotel group’s latest offering has been making waves on the hotel circuit since its opening in April this year.

Awarded the ‘Best Gourmet Getaway’ at this year’s Mr & Mrs Smith hotel awards, judges described The Pig at Bridge Place as having a ‘relaxed ambience’ with ‘wonderfully idiosyncratic interiors’.

The Mr & Mrs Smith judges said: “With the success of the other Pigs, you might expect the group’s Kentish debut to rest on its laurels. Not so: this tried and tested formula is far from tired. The fierce commitment to a 25km menu, relaxed ambience and wonderfully idiosyncratic interiors work wonders in the heart of English wine country.”

The property by Robin and Judy Hutson is the sixth for the Pig group. Robin previously founded the Hotel du Vin group and chaired the Soho House group, both he and Judy are also responsible for Hampshire’s luxury Limewood Hotel.

Bridge Place is set in a 17th century manor house known for its debauched parties in the Sixties and Seventies that hosted the likes of Led Zeppelin and The Kinks, posters on the back of bathroom doors pay homage to this era.

A spokesperson for The Pig told the Standard: “We are delighted to be named the Best Gourmet Getaway by Mr & Mrs Smith. An award like this means a lot to us and it’s so nice to be recognised for delivering great food.

“Guests can expect lots of delicious veg and fruit from the kitchen garden plus local produce selected from some of the fabulous suppliers in this part of Kent. On the wine menu there’s heaps of delicious Kentish wine to choose from, one of the many advantages of being located in the heart of the Wine Garden of England.”

Leading the new era of luxe mini-breaks , The Pig at Bridge Place has undergone extensive renovations to create 31 cosy rooms and self-contained lodges – ranging from the reasonable ‘extremely small room’ (£99 per night midweek) to the standalone barn (£325 per night midweek).

Interiors here have been led by Judy Huston, who transformed the dated Grade II-listed décor into a space that marries traditional wood panelling with deep-hued velvet sofas, roll top tubs and antiquated fireplaces. Every detail has been carefully considered and even the garden sheds have been transformed into luxe spa treatment rooms, aptly named the ‘Potting Shed’

Yet, it’s the award-winning food that will see droves on Londoners flock south. The ethos at The Pig at Bridge Place is simple: everything here is hyperlocally sourced, what is not grown in its Kitchen Garden is gathered from within a 25-mile radius. The result is a quintessentially English menu – with the likes of Thyme Roasted Celeriac and Kentish Game Pie – using only the freshest ingredients.
