Inside Peter Kay's break from limelight two years after cancelling tour

Peter Kay gave fans a start over the weekend by cropping on social media two years after retreating from the limelight.

The comedian, 46, felt the need to speak out to slam a Channel 5 show that claimed to be ‘in his own words ‘ when in fact, he had nothing to do with the documentary.

Peter’s Twitter turn came almost two years to the day since he cancelled all of his tour dates, along with all other public work, in December 2017 in mysterious circumstances.

The shock move left fans especially brokenhearted as the string of dates had been the first chance to see Peter on the stage eight years.

It’s been two years since Peter Kay cancelled his tour and retreated from the limelight

The Bolton-born funnyman told fans: “Due to unforeseen family circumstances, I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects.

It came just a week before he appeared on Strictly Come Dancing .

“This includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance for Life shows and any outstanding live work commitments,” he continued.

He made a brief cameo to announce the tour dates

“My sincerest apologies… I’m sure you’ll understand that my family must always come first.” he said.

“I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media. I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time.

“Once again, I’m very sorry.”

He apologised to fans and said he hadn’t taken the decision ‘lightly’

His disappearance from the spotlight was immediate, with his Twitter page plunged into silence.

Social media was awash with theories about what could have happened to th comedy favourite, but no further statement was given.

Then in March 2018, Peter sparked a frenzy by breaking his silence to reveal a charity screening Peter Kay’s Car Share.

He was finally seen on stage a month later when he made a surprise appearance at the fundraiser in Blackpool.

Peter looked on good form as he told his audience: “Thank you very much for supporting the Lily Foundation raising money for mitochondrial disease. Very kind of you. I appreciate it. Enjoy the last ever episode of Car Share.

“Don’t tell anyone the end. Or tell anyone about any hedgehogs.”

But his return was shortlived.

Peter continued to support Car Share on social media

While Peter’s social media account continued to retweet posts about Car Share, it would be another nine months before he was seen in public again.

January 2018 saw Virgin Radio host Chris Evans claim Peter was planning to attend the National Television Awards after Car Share scored a nod.

Peter’s Car Share co-star Sian Gibson fuelled the fire when she tweeted, “Woohooooo we are going to the NTAs,” ahead of the ceremony at London’s O2 Arena.

The BBC show won the best comedy gong, but it’s creator didn’t show.

Sian Gibson collected the award on behalf of her and Peter, who she said was watching at home

Handing out the award to Sian, Peter’s Phoenix Night’s co-star Paddy McGuinness joked, “Where is he? Where is he?” and Sian revealed he was, “watching from home with a cup of tea.”

The actress – whose character Kayleigh Kitson fell for supermarket manager John Redmond (Peter Kay) on their daily commute – has, however, confirmed they were working on new projects.

“We have got things that we are going to do together,” she told the Daily Star.

“Obviously I like to do my own stuff as well and hopefully the two can carry on.”

Peter Kay’s Car Share was a huge hit with viewers

But Peter managed to go another eight months without being pictured in public.

Hours after he slammed a festive special about himself, a photo emerged of Peter with some fellow famous faces.

A snap of the funnyman, 46, has been shared on Twitter showing him as he attended Nativity! The Musical in London to watch the show’s final performance on December 29.

Debbie Isitt, who directs the show, shared the picture on social media.

Peter Kay, 46, made an appearance at the Crewe Lyceum Theatre to watch X Factor star Chico and iconic duo Canon and Ball in a Peter Pan production on Friday

Another snap of Peter Kay was shared in tweet by filmmaker Debbie Isitt.

“So lovely to see the brilliant comic genius Peter Kay and his lovely family @nativityuk tonight for our final show!” she wrote. “What a lovely surprise for us all.”

Another picture of the much-loved entertainer appeared in the Sun, showing him with celebrity cast members from the Peter Pan panto in Crewe – Tommy Cannon, 81, Bobby Ball, 75, and X Factor ’s Chico Slimani, 48.

Before than official statement was posted to Peter’s Twitter account that confirmed he had nothing to do with the Peter Kay: In His Own Words documentary.

The statement said: “Very flattering of Channel 5 to commission the programme going out tonight, but just to let people known that ‘Peter Kay: In His Own Words’ has an incredibly misleading title, as it doesn’t feature any new interviews with Peter and all the footage is completely historic.

“The title also gives the impression that Peter has been involved in the making of this documentary, which he hasn’t. At all.”
