Inside Celine’s new Haute Parfumerie Boutique in Paris, their first fragrance flirtation in 55 years

Hedi Slimane has caused a furore amongst Celine fans several times since his appointment as the French fashion house’s Creative Director in February 2018.

Initially there was the furore when he dropped the accent from the brand’s name – he did a similar thing at Saint Laurent, where he famously dropped the word “Yves”.

There was then the furore after he debuted his first collection for the house, with fans of the brand complaining that he had too-readily tried to morph it in to a reincarnation of Saint Laurent, where he had been for six years prior to his appointment at Celine.

And then there was a furore (this time of the positive kind) amongst the fashion and beauty communities in late August, when it was announced that Slimane would be launching a collection of 11 unisex fragrances – something Celine hadn’t done since its 1964 scent, Vent Fou.

And today it continues, as nine of the 11 scents make their debut within the first Celine Haute Parfumerie boutique in Paris (the remaining two will be unveiled in 2020.)

The space, which is located at 390, Rue Saint-Honoré, has been constructed from a perfectly orchestrated mixture of antique marble, an array of mirrors and illuminated slabs of alabaster, all evoking a sense of French modernism.

The collection of 11 fragrances are an ode to Slimane’s home town of Paris, and the scents aim to evoke the multifaceted existence of what it is to live in Paris: ‘Nightclubbing’, for example, was inspired by the designer’s youth spent partying at Les Bains Douches.

While ‘Rimbaud’ is named after the 18th-century French poet, whose work Slimane recited and revered during his teenage years.

Celine, which was founded in 1945, has made the newly-opened perfume store a work of art in itself: the space hosts minimalist canvases by Camilla Reyman and Søren Sejr; and a glazed gunmetal piece by Rochelle Goldberg, all of which were commissioned especially for the boutique.

While this is a landmark moment for the French fashion house’s fragrant history, Slimane previously launched three fragrances during his tenure at Dior Homme – named Eau Noire, Blanche and d’Argent.

Celine’s scents start from £175 and are available to buy from the Celine Haute Perfumerie, the brand’s boutiques and its website.
