India v Australia: third one-day international – live!

India must chase 314 from 50 overs to win

Australia notch a solid score to pass 300, but they were on track for more like 350 at one stage. It’s always hard to know what to make of situations like this one. The opening partnership built more than a foundation, it built half the house as well: 193 by the time it was broken. Finch made 93, Khawaja 104 with his first ODI ton.

Maxwell then came in at first drop and was flying, 47 from 31 balls, but was extremely unlucky to be run out by a moment of magic from Jadeja and Dhoni.

That allowed India’s bowlers to start clambering back into the game. Kuldeep ended up with three wickets despite taking a few licks. Shankar did an excellent job again after unexpectedly having to fill in early in the day when Shami spent some time off the field after he was smashed in the shin.

Jadeja did a tidy job bar one over, Bumrah was hard to get away at key times, and on what looks an excellent batting track, India will still feel they’re well in the game. Kohli chose to chase at the toss and reasoned at the time that he was confident the conditions would hold up. And no one has chased better than he and Dhoni across the game’s history.

Should be a cracker of a contest then after the break, with the pace of Jhye Richardson and Pat Cummins up against India’s openers, and with both of them having a track record of dismissing Kohli, who made his 40th ODI hundred a couple of days ago in the previous match.

Rob Smyth will guide you through that chase – catch you next time.
