Virat Kohli says the ‘lowest point of his career’ came during India’s tour of England in 2014 when he woke up ‘knowing he was going to fail’.
Kohli arrived in England with a huge reputation but scored just 134 runs in ten innings during the five-match Test series at an average of less than 14.
James Anderson dismissed Kohli four times as England clinched a 3-1 series victory and the current India captain has opened up on his struggles that summer.
‘I think the lowest point of my career was against England in 2014,’ Kohli said on Instagram Live alongside England legend Kevin Pietersen.
‘That’s one phase that I felt like I knew I was going to get out. You know in the morning that you are going to get out.
‘I felt like that. But still you have to get out of bed and get dressed and go out there and to go through it all knowing you were going to fail. That ate me up and demolished me.
‘I promised myself I wouldn’t let myself go through that again.
‘It happened because I was too focused on doing well from a personal point of view. I wasn’t thinking about the team.
‘I was focused on trying to establish myself in England and in Test cricket and it just ate me up. I was going through a downward spiral and it was horrible.’
