Immortals: Fenyx Rising release date, platforms & gameplay news

If you’re a fan of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, then chances are you’ll already know about the short, but troubled, history of Gods & Monsters. Announced by Ubisoft at E3 2019 and in development by the team behind Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, the new title looks to fill the mythical RPG gap in the upcoming game roster.

But since the original announcement, the game has been renamed and reimagined – something first teased by Ubisoft itself after the E3 2019 demo leaked on Stadia earlier this year.

While Ubisoft didn’t confirm the name, the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee has rated a Ubisoft game called Immortals: Fenyx Rising, and considering the updated game’s listing also leaked on the Microsoft Store, it’s all but confirmed that it’s the new name of Gods & Monsters.

There’s an Ubisoft Forward event planned for 10 September, so we don’t have long to find out for sure. Until then, here’s everything there is to know about Immortals: Fenyx Rising, formerly known as Gods & Monsters.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising release date

Despite showing no real gameplay at the E3 2019 reveal, Ubisoft claimed that (what was called) Gods and Monsters would come out on 25 February 2020, before delaying the game to the 2020-21 financial year – meaning sometime between April 2020 and March 2021.

It’s likely that we’ll get a release date at Ubisoft Forward on 10 September, but Microsoft might’ve let the cat out of the bag a little early. In a now-removed listing for Immortals: Fenyx Rising, the rumoured new name of the game, it mentioned a 3 December 2020 release date.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising platforms

It’ll be available on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch upon release, and at this point, it’s safe to assume it’ll also be optimised for the PS5 and Xbox Series X too – the Smart Delivery option in the now-removed Microsoft Store listing suggests it’ll feature an optimised version for next-gen consoles, anyway.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising gameplay

As seen in the initial E3 2019 reveal trailer, there’s a distinctly Zelda-esque style at play, and that’s seemingly backed up by an early build demo that briefly appeared on Google Stadia in June 2020.

A demo version of the game under the codename Orpheus was accidentally made available on Google Stadia for around 30 minutes in early June, giving players an unauthorised early look at the game.

In the early gameplay demo, you can see Zelda-inspired elements including a circular stamina bar that’s depleted as you climb walls and sprint, and the combat looks incredibly familiar too.

Ubisoft has since confirmed to Eurogamer that it was the E3 2019 demo and that it’s an extremely early build of the game – that’s clear from the placeholders seen in gameplay videos posted to Reddit.

In fact, Ubisoft claims that a lot has changed since the E3 2019 trailer, including “features, tone, art, and character design, and even the name of the game” and that details will be shared soon. With Ubisoft Forward taking place on 10 September, we don’t have much longer to wait.

However, just under a week before the official reveal, the Microsoft Store listing for the updated Immortals: Fenyx Rising went live, giving quick gamers a first look at the updated game before it was taken down hours later.

As well as the release date, mentioned above, the listing was packed full of screenshots that look a lot less Zelda-like than the original gameplay trailer, and it detailed gameplay elements too.

Per the description, Immortals: Fenyx Rising is an open-world action game comprised of seven unique regions. Somewhat obviously, you’ll play as Fenyx, who’s on a mission to save the ancient Greek gods from a curse. As you progress through the game, you’ll be able to make use of the iconic powers and weapons wielded by the Greek gods, including Achilles’ sword and Daidalos’ wings.

When it comes to combat, you’ll be fighting both on the ground and in the air, and the accompanying screenshots backed that up too. You’ll go up against mythological monsters including Medusa and Cyclops, and there’s also a puzzle-solving element teased in the description too.
