Imelda Staunton will take over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Claire Foy and Olivia Colman in season 5 of The Crown

The Crown may have only just returned to our screens for season 3 but Netflix is already plotting their next royal move. With a fifth season now confirmed, the question on everyone’s lips is who will succeed Olivia Colman as Elizabeth II?

Well, the wait is finally over. The streaming giant has confirmed Imelda Stanton, best known for her role as Lady Bagshawe in Downton Abbey, will take to the throne for the show’s dramatic fifth and sixth seasons.

With her previous roles in Downton Abbey and BBC series Cambridge Spies where she played the Queen Mother, Imelda is already well acquainted with the British aristocracy.

The British actress will be the third to play Elizabeth II with Claire Foy playing the part in the first two series followed by Olivia Coleman in seasons three and four. This is part of Netflix’s plan to replace the cast’s major roles once they’ve completed twenty episodes to avoid digitally ageing the actors.

While no plotlines have been released, The Crown S5 is expected to span across the 1990s and early Noughties in the monarchy. With Imelda playing the Queen in her mid-60s, the series is likely to cover Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s rocky marriage and his consequent affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince Andrew’s separation from Sarah Ferguson, and Princess Anne’s divorce from Captain Mark Phillips. There is also suggestion that the series will cover the fire at Windsor Castle and Diana’s tragic death in 1997.

Season 3 of The Crown is currently on Netflix with all ten episodes available to stream. It spans across the years of 1964-76, marking the introduction of Charles’ second wife Camilla Parker-Bowles and believe it or not – the coming of age of 70s fashion icon, Princess Anne.

Long may The Crown reign supreme.
