Idris Elba’s cool status took a slight hit after he signed up for the Cats live-action movie and his Hobbs & Shaw co-stars were absolutely loving it.

When you think of Idris Elba, you think cool, calm, collected. You think hard as nuts DI Luther, suave DJ and James Bond material, right? Right.

So you can imagine the sheer joy of his co-stars when they found out Idris will be playing Macavity in the upcoming Cats movie, based on the musical by Andrew Lloyd-Webber.

Cats is a classic, no doubt. But that didn’t stop Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham from giving old Idris stick.

Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert over in the US, Idris confessed he became the butt of many jokes between Johnson and Statham.

Idris said: ‘When I was working on Hobbs & Shaw, just after that I went to work on Cats.

‘So I’m working with Dwayne and Jason and as soon as they found out I was working on Cats, this was their favourite thing to do as I walked on set.

‘We’re doing this big fight scene, I’m walking in looking all bravado and they’re like, “Hey Idris, what areyou doing next?” And the crew would be like, “Yeah, what are you doing next?” And I would be like, “… Cats.’

Please, Cats is huge and its star-studded cast for the new release says just that.

Idris is joined by Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, Taylor Swift, Sir Ian McKellen… need we say more?

Fans got their first taste of what’s to come in the live-adaptation in a new trailer that dropped earlier this month, showing Idris and Shake It Off singer Taylor in action.

The movie features Lloyd Webber’s original 1981 musical score and is written by Billy Elliott screen-writer Lee Hall.

But, if you ask to Idris to explain to you what the movie is actually about, you won’t have much luck.

When asked about the plot by Colbert, he tried to sum it up as best he could: ‘It’s a classic. It’s a big musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I guess it’s about a cat? How am I doing?’

We’d say there’s room for improvement, Idris. Just a tad.
