Ian Wright wants to see Dani Ceballos in freer role behind Arsenal’s deadly front three

Ian Wright has urged Unai Emery to keep faith in Dani Ceballos despite his peripheral performance against Liverpool and wants him to play further forward behind an attacking front three.

The Spaniard set up both of Arsenal’s goals in their victory over Burnley two weeks ago and was given a standing ovation by the Emirates crowd when he was subbed off in the second half.

But, as part of the Gunners’ midfield diamond at Anfield a week later, Ceballos could not stamp his mark on the match and Emery admitted afterwards that he had ‘struggled’.

But Wright is a huge fan of Ceballos’ playmaking abilities and wants to see him given license to feed Arsenal’s ferocious front three with two more defence-conscious players behind him.

Speaking on his YouTube channel before the north London derby, Wright explained: ‘We’ve got Dani for what… a year? He may not sign again, so let’s use him as much as we can.

‘I’m sure he was disappointed about the role he had to play in the Liverpool game, so let’s play him right behind those three and let’s get going.

‘Torreira and Guendouzi behind him snapping around people. Get the ball into Ceballos who can then get Pepe free, get Auba free, link it up into Lacazette, Lacazette holds it up, Auba scores and we’re back again!’

Ceballos’ performances for Arsenal have been noted by Spain boss Robert Moreno, who called up the Real Madrid loanee for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Romania and the Faroe Islands.

He could face added competition for a starting role in the coming weeks and months, however, with Emery confirming that Mesut Ozil will stay at the Emirates and is in contention to play in the north London derby.

The Arsenal boss said on Thursday: ‘We are not speaking about the possibility for Mesut to leave. This week he is physically better and he is training and doing normal work with us. He is going to be closer to us and he will be available on Sunday.’
