Ian Wright tells Unai Emery he wants change to Dani Ceballos' role in Arsenal team

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has said he would like to see Dani Ceballos play in a more advanced role behind a front three.

The Spanish playmaker, 23, has impressed since moving to the Emirates Stadium on a season-long loan deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid .

He produced a standout display during the Gunners’ 2-1 win over Burnley a fortnight ago, setting up both of his team’s goals.

However, he wasn’t able to replicate that performance against Premier League leaders Liverpool last week as Unai Emery’s side suffered their first loss of the season at Anfield.

The Arsenal boss admitted after the match that Ceballos struggled as part of a midfield diamond, but former striker Wright has urged the Spaniard to persist with the Madrid loanee and to reconsider his role in the team.

Wright explained on his Youtube channel : “We’ve got Dani for what… a year? He may not sign again, so let’s use him as much as we can.

“I’m sure he was disappointed about the role he had to play in the Liverpool game, so let’s play him right behind those three [strikers]and let’s get going.

“[Lucas] Torreira and [Matteo] Guendouzi behind him snapping around people.

“Get the ball into Ceballos who can then get [Nicolas] Pepe free, get [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang free, link it up into [Alexandre] Lacazette, Lacazette holds it up, Auba scores and we’re back again!”

Arsenal welcome local rivals Tottenham to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday for the first North London derby of the season.

After missing the Gunners’ opening three games, Mesut Ozil is back in contention to feature for the first time this season against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

The German was linked with several potential transfers over the summer, but Emery has made clear he doesn’t expect any deals to be concluded before the European transfer window closes on September 2.

He also expects the 30-year-old to play a key role in the squad this season as they look to return to the Champions League.

He said: “We need him – and him firstly to be consistent in training, to be available in each match.

“For example, last week he wasn’t ready to play 100 percent at Liverpool . This week he is getting better with each training session and physically he is now better.

“We need him because he is a different player in our team. We have different ways to prepare to win, and different qualities with the players, different characteristics from them. We need him to be available and he can help us with his quality.”
