Ian Wright has commended Nacho Monreal for his ‘professionalism’ after Arsenal confirmed their long-serving left-back has joined Real Sociedad.

The Spain international’s first team place has been jeopardised by the summer signing of Kieran Tierney from Celtic and continued presence of Sead Kolasinac in Unai Emery’s first team squad.

With Tierney unlikely to make his Arsenal debut until late September at the earliest due to injuy, Monreal had started the new season as Arsenal’s first choice left-back with Emery reverting to a flat back four.

Monreal wore the captain’s armband against Liverpool last weekend and Emery had hoped that the 33-year-old would turn out one last time for Arsenal in Sunday’s north London derby.

Ultimately, however, it was decided that a potential injury against Spurs would unnecessarily scupper a move that Monreal wants to make given the security Sociedad are offering in the shape of a two-year deal, with the option to extend for a third.

‘All the best Nacho Monreal,’ club legend Wright wrote on Twitter. ‘Total professional who always gave 100%. Six consistent seasons at the top.’

Wright’s praise contrasts starkly to his reaction at the behaviour of Laurent Koscileny who went on strike earlier this summer in a bid to force through a move to Bordeaux.

‘This hurts,’ Wright said after Koscielny ripped of an Arsenal top to reveal the colours of his new team upon confirmation of his signing. ‘The level of disrespect. You should be ashamed for the way you’ve left the club after 9 years!

‘Got what you wanted and still trying to have a dig. Hope it’s worth it in the long run. So unnecessary. 9 years and you do this…makes no sense.’
