Ian Wright questions why Man Utd signed Cavani over priority transfer targets

Ian Wright has criticised Manchester United’s recruitment strategy last summer for “plugging gaps” rather than investing in their priority targets as part of a long-term vision.

United made a Deadline Day swoop to land veteran striker Edinson Cavani on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

Cavani, 33, moved to Old Trafford on a one-year contract worth a reported £200,000 per week with the option to extend his stay for another year.

While the Uruguayan has impressed since the move, many fans saw his arrival as underwhelming after a transfer window during which United were heavily linked with 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund stars Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho.

Wright has questioned why United handed Cavani a £200,000-per-week deal

Wright believes the last-minute move for Cavani is symptomatic of the Red Devils’ stop-gap transfer policy.

The Arsenal legend told the Kelly & Wrighty Show : “When you look back, you can go as far back as Henrik Larsson, they bring in that kind of maverick forward just to kind of plug gaps.

“You’ve got Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Radamel Falcao, now they’ve got [Odion] Ighalo even and Cavani.

Wright believes United’s transfer policy is reactive rather than proactive

“When are they going to get it? Because they’ve got Cavani, but why didn’t they get Erling Haaland? Or Jadon Sancho?

“It’s just strange what they settle for, for the club that they are, [compared to] what they should be getting. It’s really strange.”

Nonetheless, Cavani impressed last weekend as his two goals and one assist off the bench led United to a remarkable comeback victory at Southampton.

Meanwhile, United’s squad is set for an injection of youth in January as Amad Diallo is expected to link-up with his new teammates as he completes a move from Atalanta.

The 18-year-old will provide manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with another option on the wing, while teenager Facundo Pellistri is continuing his development with the reserves.
