Ian Wright opens up on text message advice to Arsenal starlet Gabriel Martinelli

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has revealed that he has been exchanging messages with Gabriel Martinelli after the Brazilian forward reached out on social media.

Martinelli has been one of the bright spots for the Gunners this season following his arrival from Ituano over the summer.

His performances for the North London club have caught the eye and seen him quickly gain several admirers, including Wright.

And the former England striker, who scored 185 goals for Arsenal, said that he has been in contact with the 18-year-old and providing him with advice.

“I have been in contact with him over text and you can see he is so hungry to do well,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live .

“He got in touch on Instagram and we went from there. I get a lot of sliding! I have a broad spectrum of experience I can share.

“I just text him saying ‘well done’, ‘good movement’ and things like that. ‘Keep getting yourself in the box’ and ‘keep making near post runs’.

“As an 18 year-old, it is nice for people to say you are doing well.”

Martinelli was handed a start by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta for Saturday’s game against Sheffield United in the absence of top-scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is currently serving a three-match suspension.

And the teenager stepped up to find the net for the Gunners in the 1-1 draw with Chris Wilder’s side.

It was the Brazilian’s ninth goal in 20 matches in all competitions this season, and Wright is confident that it is just the start.

“When you see him you can see that determination and hunger,” he added. “You almost have to rein him in a little bit.

“We are very lucky to have him and if he carries on improving then it will be very difficult to keep him.

“If Arsenal keep creating chances, the way he moves in the box, he is going to score goals.”
