I was the first person to try the Aldi mascara everyone's talking about and was so impressed

PRODUCT

Lacura Too Legit Mascara, £5.99. Available from 2nd June.

THE HYPE

Aldi may be synonymous with purse-friendly groceries and budget booze but the thrifty supermarket has recently made a foray into the beauty business – with some serious success.

Indeed, according to a new consumer survey for Channel 5 Shop Smart: Save Money, discount sunscreen from Aldi protects us better from ultraviolet rays. The show compared six popular suncream brands with SPF 30: Garnier Ambre Solaire, Nivea Sun, Piz Buin, Boots, Superdrugs and Aldi, and the store’s Jo Malone-inspired candles have become pretty iconic.

The latest beauty drop set to land in Aldi is a lash-lengthening mascara that promises to give serious curl, definition and lift in one swipe. Plus, at £.599, it promises to be a purse-friendly alternative to other brands. Whilst it isn’t on sale until June 2, there’s a lot of hype surrounding the mascara so we were keen to take it for a spin.

According to the product description, “The first thing everyone notices about you will be your eyes with this brilliant mascara. Long-lasting, this make up essential will make sure your eyes pop by adding curl, definition and dramatic length and volume to your lashes. Perfect for everyday or evenings out, this will soon become your new go-to item.”

BEAUTY BIO

I categorically will not leave the house without mascara and it has to be lengthening, volumnising, long-lasting, non-flaking, waterproof and non-smudging. Is that really too much to ask?

THE REVIEW

First off, this packaging looks suspiciously familiar (Benefit Bad Gal Lash, anyone?). As a loyal devotee to Benefit mascaras (Roller Lash forever has a place in my heart), I was intrigued to see how this budget offering would fare.

There’s nothing I hate more than a super clumpy mascara that transforms my eyes into spider lashes after one swipe of the brush; this guy, however, has an innovative precision brush which can extend and volumise all lashes individually without over-coating them. It really did live up to the hype. Whilst I had to apply about three coats to achieve the volume I wanted, this slightly laborious process was worth it for the lash separation it offered. After three coats of the stuff, my lashes were lifted, defined and had some of the best separation I’ve ever experienced.

I decided to really put it to the test by applying it before my spinning class and it actually lived to tell the tale. Admittedly, I did have to reapply some before I went out that evening but for £5.99, I’m sold. Whilst it will never knock Roller Lash’s coveted crown off, it’s a purse-friendly alternative that really does the job.

Here are all the other brilliant mascaras we swear by for lash perfection…
