'I was double the workload!' Strictly's Aston Merrygold slams row over dance experience

Aston Merrygold, 33, was partnered with Janette Manrara, 37, on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017. The JLS bandmate has addressed criticism on the BBC show after viewers’ called out the contestants’ level of dance experience.

In previous years, Strictly contestants have been scrutinised amid claims that they’ve been trained in dance prior to taking part in the competition.

Recently, EastEnders’ actress Maisie Smith, 20, was quizzed about her level of dance experience after she took part in the show last year.

The soap star categorically denied the claims and explained she had “no technical training” before taking part in Strictly.

Aston, who is a self-taught dancer, has opened up about the downsides of taking part in the BBC show.

“With me, you had to pull me back and then push me in the right direction. I was kind of double the workload.”

Aston added: “That will always be confusing for people without dance experience is that it’s a lot harder than it’s made out to be.

“You have to commend those guys that are on the show. Busting their a** every week because it is a difficult job.”

Aston and Janette reached week seven in Strictly before the pair were voted out of competition.
