‘I fear for children’s mental health during lockdown’, says Penny Lancaster

As the pandemic raged, the couple sat the two boys, the youngest of Sir Rod’s eight children, down to explain the dangers of coronavirus. But the mum-of-two told the Daily Express she fears the secret victim of COVID-19 is children’s wellbeing. She explained: “The schools have only been back one week but who knows when they might shut again?

“There is an argument about what is more damaging. Is it the virus or is it the mental health situation that children are going through?

“As adults we try to put all the dots together and figure out what the future means, but for children it’s so worrying.

“We’ve had a lot of family time, but for their mental health our children needed to be back at school.”

Penny said her children had been delighted to finally get back to school and see their friends.

She added: “I’ve seen a huge change in my kids attitude since they went back. They are so much happier. I’m happy they are not in the house too – I can breathe again.

“I’m just relieved I don’t have to do any more schoolwork because that was hellish! I could handle the work of the nine-year-old but the 14-year-old was complicated!”

Penny, an ambassador for disabled children’s charity Caudwell Children, spoke to us from her home while taking part in the annual BGC Charity Day 2020.
