‘I didn’t appreciate how difficult it was for my wife and family’: Andy Murray on his recovery, favourite date and the future

Andy Murray has revealed his favourite thing to do with his wife Kim is to take on escape rooms – where he assesses the challenge like a high-stakes tennis match.

The couple married in 2015 and are parents to children Sophia, three, Edie, one, and baby Teddy, who was born earlier this month.

The grand-slam winner is currently making a comeback after two years undergoing surgeries and rehab for a severe hip injury.

To unwind, he told the Standard his favourite thing to do to with his young children is joining in soft play near the family home in Oxshott, Surrey, but said the couple themselves have a more unusual hobby.

He said: “It’s going to escape rooms – we started doing them a lot in the summer and I really, really enjoyed doing them.

“I just find it‘s quite an interesting way of studying people, because everyone’s personality comes out in them, even people that you know really well, but you don’t necessarily get into situations like that with them, or work with them.

“When we go in, I always go in and stand back… They’re [Kim and friends] immediately straight into all the tasks and I’m sort of looking back and trying to see what everyone is up to. I would say that it’s quite similar to how I would be like on the court.”

The Wimbledon champion also spoke about how his emotional recovery journey since 2017 – charted in a new feature-length documentary on Amazon Prime, Andy Murray: Resurfacing – has impacted his wife and children.

“Reflecting on the last few years I didn’t appreciate how difficult it was for my wife and for my family,” he said.

“I’m going through this process I’m being selfish and thinking a lot about myself, but your family and your team and everything as part of it as well. They’re suffering with you, but you don’t always realise that when you’re in it.”

Last night baby Teddy attended the documentary’s world premiere screening at The Curzon Bloomsbury, where his father saw the program for the first time.

Shot by director Olivia Cappuccini – the girlfriend of Mrs Murray’s brother Scott Sears – the program features intimate behind-the-scenes access and interviews.

The player admitted to an audience, including brother Jamie and mum Judy, that he was nervous for its release because “a lot of the stuff was pretty raw”.

Murray also opened up about the family’s plans for the future, saying: “I’ve been getting up in the morning, taking them  [the kids] to school, picking them up from school – I was rehabbing for the last seven months but that’s also what changed once the pain was gone.

“I was focusing on my family and spending more time with them, and I want to do that more and be at home more now… I built up an amazing relationship with my second daughter which I didn’t get to do with the first one perhaps, because I was away travelling and competing so much.”

Andy Murray: Resurfacing will be released on Amazon Prime on Friday.
