'I added Marmite to my meals for a week and it was surprisingly delicious'

It’s no secret that Marmite is a divisive item – the spread’s slogan is you either love it or hate it.

And if you’re someone that hates the stuff, then you’re probably going to be a little horrified by what I have spent the last week doing.

That’s because I’ve been trying out Gousto’s new recipe box, which is filled with limited-edition Marmite recipes.

The company have teamed up with Marmite to create seven recipes, including  Marmite Pineapple Pizza, Marmite and Peanut Butter Pork Udon and Marmite Fried Chicken.

I’ve given several of the recipes a go, adding Marmite to my dinners and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised with the results.

Gousto have teamed up with Marmite for seven new limited-edition recipes

Marmite popcorn tofu with sticky rice

My Gousto box contained the recipe cards and ingredients to make Marmite Teriyaki Popcorn Tofu and Sticky Rice, Marmite Mushroom Carbonara, Marmite Pineapple Pizza and Marmite Fried Chicken with Chips and Apple Slaw.

The first recipe I tried was the Popcorn Tofu and having never had tofu before, it was better than I’d thought it would be. I’d worried it would taste rather bland, but the Marmite helped to create a glossy teriyaki-style glaze that was really tasty. Plus it was fun making fluffy sushi rice at home – I almost felt like I was eating a takeaway.

Next up was the Marmite Pineapple Pizza, which was a ham and pineapple pizza, but the pineapple was coated in a Marmite marinade before being added as a topping and going in the oven.

It sounds like it shouldn’t work, but surprisingly it did. It made for an interesting meal and my boyfriend was very impressed – so much so, that he attempted to put Marmite pineapple on a pepperoni pizza a few days later, but I drew the line at this.

Marmite Mushroom Carbonara

Marmite Fried Chicken with chips and apple slaw

The Marmite Carbonara was also delicious – though this wasn’t shocking, as I’m already a big fan of Nigella Lawson’s Marmite Spaghetti (try it if you haven’t, it’s so good!)

But the best recipe by far in my opinion was the Marmite Fried Chicken – though we did almost set the house on fire while heating up the oil.Whoops!

Using natural yogurt and Marmite in the batter mixture was a revelation, I’d never have thought to try it, but it worked really well and made for crunchy, umami, fried chicken perfection.
