I accidentally named my son Audrey – now my family say I’ve ruined his life

A NEW mum has been left mortified after she “accidentally” named her newborn son Audrey.

The anonymous woman took to Reddit where she revealed she had decided to name her little boy after the nurse who had helped her through a traumatic birth.

She explained that she had no idea she was even pregnant until a week before she gave birth.

“I had no problem figuring out the father, who was my best friend (now boyfriend) because he’s the only guy I’ve ever slept with,” she wrote.

“I was completely freaking out when I found out because I wasn’t ready at all, and I didn’t tell him because his mother was fighting COVID so I didn’t want to put him through any more stress.”

She also didn’t know how to tell her parents, so she went into the birth without a support system, and without any plans for a name.

“I almost died delivering the baby and the only person by my side was my doctor, who saved my life. I decided I would name my son after her albeit in a variant or middle name sort of way. (Like Christina to Christian or something),” she said.

“Her name was Audrey, and I distinctly remembered that—although it’s less common—Audrey can be used as a boy’s name, and I actually thought it was very cute, so that’s what I named my son.”

She was happy with the name, but her relatives were not as impressed.

“When I broke the news about my pregnancy to my parents, they were actually very happy they got a beautiful little boy, but they told me that giving him a girl’s name is cruel,” she said.

“I told them it was a less known fact, but Audrey can be a boy’s name. We looked it up, and apparently, I was thinking of AUBREY.”

“I feel like an idiot,” the woman said. “Now that my boyfriend and I are in a relationship and raising Audrey together, he tells me that he loves the name.

“He says it’s stupid that one letter can change the gender of the name and says it’s just a bunch of letters anyway and has no inherent gender.

“He says he can’t picture him as anything but Audrey. Reactions from friends are very mixed, but many are telling me we’re preemptively ruining Audrey’s life.”

She asked Reddit what they thought of the name.

Reddit told the woman to keep the name if she and her partner liked it.

“You named him for a very sweet reason to honour someone,” wrote one person. “If others have an issue with it, that’s their problem, not yours.”

The same commenter also pointed out a link explaining that Audrey was, in fact, a male name traditionally before it began to be used almost exclusively for girls.

Another person said a name change was not going to protect the child against bullies: “If he’s bullied at school, that’s honestly not because of his name.

“If kids want to bully, they will find a reason. And it’s not yours or your kid’s fault for him being bullied, it’s the bully.”
