Ben Affleck has been cast as the lead in Robert Rodriguez’s new sci-fi thriller, Hypnotic – an original project which is being described as a grounded cop thriller with sci-fi elements.
According to Variety, Affleck will play a detective who’s drawn into a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program, while investigating a string of impossible high-end heists.
Rodriguez is directing and producing the project, and the shoot is scheduled to start in April 2020, with the filmmaker working around Affleck’s busy schedule. They’ll be working from a screenplay by Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King Of Monsters), which is reportedly a reworking of an original script by Rodriguez.
Hypnotic will be Rodriguez’s first big-screen project after this year’s James Cameron-produced cyberpunk manga adaptation, Alita: Battle Angel. There’s no word yet on a sequel to Alita, which had a lukewarm response at the box-office (making just over $400 million worldwide) but amassed a very loyal cult following. Meanwhile, his long-gestating third instalment of the Machete franchise, Machete Kills In Space, still hasn’t worked its way out of development hell.
Affleck’s 2020 is shaping up to be a busy one, with Hypnotic adding an extra project to a slate that already includes Adrian Lyne’s erotic thriller Deep Water; Ridley Scott’s period drama The Last Duel, co-starring Matt Damon and Adam Driver; basketball movie The Way Back; and Netflix’s The Last Thing He Wanted, opposite Anne Hathaway.
