Hunt vows to protect UK’s union better than Boris during action-packed visit to Scotland

JEREMY Hunt has opened up a new flank of attack on Boris Johnson to declare he would protect the United Kingdom’s union better.

The Foreign Secretary’s visited Scotland yesterday to cast doubt on his frontrunner rival’s ability to stop a second Scots breakaway referendum.

In a day of action-packed photo opportunities north of the border, Mr Hunt took the helm of a fishing boat, ate fish and chips, drank a can of Irn Bru and dressed up as a fishmonger.

He also met 99 year-old great aunt Betty for tea, who lives near Aberdeen.

Speaking in Peterhead, Mr Hunt insisted: “I am the Prime Minister that Nicola Sturgeon wants the least, because I will support the union with every drop of blood in my veins. I spent part of my childhood in Scotland.”

The visit came as Scotland’s First Minister and SNP boss Ms Sturgeon accused Boris of making “overtly racist comments”.

She backed up the SNP’s Westminster boss Ian Blackford’s attack on Mr Johnson during PMQs last week.

Mr Johnson is unpopular in Scotland, where there are a large number of Tory party members.

Elections expert Professor Sir John Curtice said: “Boris Johnson seems unlikely to bring the party much electoral dividend, while he could put at risk its hopes of keeping Scotland in the Union.

“So intense is some Remain voters’ dislike of the former mayor of London that they say, should he become prime minister, they would vote Yes rather than No in a second independence referendum.”
