Hugh Grant has recently been canvassing with Lib Dems MP Luciana Berge ahead of the General Election.

So we’re not surprised that he didn’t look all too pleased when checking his phone amid the exit poll announcement.

The 59-year-old was pictured sat with his wife Anna Eberstein in a bougie looking restaurant as the results rolled in.

And he appeared rather downcast following tonight’s news.

Taking to Twitter shortly after it was predicted the Conservative Party would get 368 seats, a majority of 86, the Love Actually star wrote: ‘There goes the neighbourhood.’

This grabbed the attention of Piers Morgan, who said on the social media platform: ‘Congrats Hugh Grant & Steve Coogan – you helped get Boris a landslide.’

While Lily Allen told her followers she was ‘still holding out for a Labour majority’ before retweeting a fan who said he’d ‘lost faith in celebrities’.

The exit poll, which has been correct in four out of the last five General Elections, is the first moment of election night to produce a tangible sense of where the voters stand.

It is based on data collected from 144 constituencies in England, Wales and Scotland, where voters are asked to cast a second replica ballot as they leave polling stations.

Earlier this month, the actor was seen out and about in Finchley, London, alongside Luciana, who is a candidate for the Finchley and Golders Green constituency.

The duo went from door to door, meeting people in the local area to listen to their concerns, before chatting to around 100 campaigners at the nearby Woodhouse College, where he revealed he was endorsing remain-backing candidates in both the Lib Dems and Labour.

Hugh got to know Luciana through his work with the Hacked Off press regulation campaign, and hailed her a ‘principled politician with guts’.

‘I knew she was feisty, strong, principled,’ he told the Ham&High. ‘I think it does take a lot of guts to give up a majority of 29,000 and come and stand in a marginal and face the wrath of her old party [Labour].

‘I think she is that rare creature of a politician with principle.’

Hugh previously urged young people to register to vote ahead of the election and also hinted that people could vote tactically to prevent a Tory majority.

The father-of-three also encouraged voters in neighbouring constituency Chipping Barnet to back the Labour Party, with the constituency having been ruled under the Conservatives since 1974.
