Huawei is planning to launch a new PC gaming brand

After a string of successes in the laptop market, Huawei has told Tech Advisor that it’s planning to expand into gaming by launching a dedicated gaming sub-brand, akin to its youth and value-focused Honor brand.

The company wouldn’t say much about what to expect from the new project, but it makes some sense given that we already know Honor is about to launch the company’s first dedicated gaming laptop, the Honor Hunter, in China next week.

We don’t know much about what to expect from the Hunter, except that it will be powered by an Intel chip unlike the recent Ryzen-powered MagicBook Pro, but it joins an ever-expanding array of Honor MagicBook and Huawei MateBook laptops – joined just today by updated version of Huawei’s MateBook X and MateBook 14.

Huawei has so far ignored gaming for the most part within its main brand, but Honor has slowly dipped its toe into the waters with the likes of the Honor Play gaming phone and partnerships with Fortnite among others.

It’s not clear if Honor will continue to produce its own line of gaming hardware after this new – as yet unnamed – brand is launched. It seems likely that there’ll be some crossover though, as Honor president George Zhao has been tipped to head up the new gaming initiative.

As for what to expect from the brand, more gaming phones and gaming laptops seem a safe bet. Headsets are likely too – Honor already products its own headphones after all – but Huawei hinted that it’s “extremely possible” the company will eventually enter the desktop and monitor business too, following its success in laptops.
