How VAR cost one football punter £25,000

The controversial VAR system made its most costly intervention at the weekend.

The Video Assistant Referee effectively cost one unlucky punter from Reading, Footie5’s top £25,000 prize!

Thepools.com’s free-to-enter game offers the prize to anybody who can correctly predict the results of five fixtures of their own choice.

A player from Reading with the username Bar1ley boldly predicted Arsenal to be held 2-2 by Crystal Palace (when VAR worked in his favour!).

He also called Swansea to beat Cardiff 1-0, Rangers to overcome Motherwell 2-1 and Liverpool to win 2-1 against Tottenham .

The fifth and deciding leg was Brighton v Everton – and with 10 minutes remaining, and having predicted a 2-1 away win, the player was on course for a big win.

Then Michael Keane trod on Aaron Connolly’s foot, referee Andy Madley waved play on, but Video Assistant Referee Lee Mason decided, after 14 separate views of the incident, that a penalty should be awarded.

Everton raged, Neil Maupay scored, and Bar1ley shook his head in dismay as his hopes of a £25,000 prize disappeared into thin air.

But Footie5 will be back this weekend. It’s free to enter and you can select your own fixtures to predict. Get involved here:
