How to sleep: Three drinks to have before bed to help you get a good night’s sleep

Sleep is an important part of a person’s health, and a lack of it can lead to serious health problems. Not only can it make a person feel grumpy, it can increase the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Most people need around eight hours of good quality sleep a night to function properly. One way to achieve this could be to have one of the following three drinks before bed.

Banana milk

Drinking banana milk before bed could help relax your muscles and lead to a restful night’s sleep.

Having a milky drink before bed is often recommended.

This could be because milk – a protein rich food – contains the sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan.

Tryptophan is needed for the body to produce serotonin, serotonin is then used to make melatonin, a hormone that helps to control your sleep and wake cycles.

But an additional ingredient you could whizz up in your milk to make the drink more effective is banana, according to experts at Healthline.

The site says: “Bananas are great news for overstressed muscles.

“Magnesium and potassium, both present in the fruit, can have positive effects on sleep and insomnia, especially in older adults.

“Even better, bananas also contain tryptophan, the sleep-regulating amino acid we discussed above.

“The magnesium in bananas also acts as a natural muscle relaxant, while potassium can be effective at treating restless leg syndrome.

“Add in a healthy dose of tryptophan, and bananas prove to be a triple threat for restful sleep.”

Cherry moon milk

Cherry pink moon milk is simply tart cherry juice added to warm milk.

Cherries are one of the few foods that naturally contain melatonin, an essential amino acid that helps boost the body’s serotonin levels.

Alongside melatonin, tart cherry juice contains tryptophan.

Researchers of one study found drinking Montmorency tart cherry juice twice a day for two weeks helped increase sleep time by nearly 90 minutes among older adults with insomnia.

Turmeric milk

Turmeric is a powerhouse of health benefits and can be enjoyed in a milky drink.

From fighting inflammation to supplying antioxidants, the popular Ayuverdic medicinal spice is widely used to aid sleep quality.

Initial studies in mice have found turmeric can protect against oxidative damage and sleep deprivation, as well as lower anxiety levels.

For those with chronic conditions, it’s anti-inflammatory properties may also prove useful.
