How to sleep: The two-ingredient drink you should have before bed for a good night’s rest

Sleep is an important process needed for the body to recover itself. Lack of sleep can make you feel grumpy, but if the problem continues it increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, stroke and diabetes.

While changes to your sleep environment are important, such as making sure the temperature is right in your room and you have comfortable bedding, some experts believe diet can play a big part in how well you sleep.

Drinking banana milk before bed could help relax your muscles and lead to a restful night’s sleep.

Having a milky drink before bed is often recommended.

This could be because milk – a protein rich food – contains the sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan.

Tryptophan is needed for the body to produce serotonin, serotonin is then used to make melatonin, a hormone that helps to control your sleep and wake cycles.

But an additional ingredient you could whizz up in your milk to make the drink more effective is banana, according to experts at Healthline.

The site says: “Bananas are great news for overstressed muscles.

“Magnesium and potassium, both present in the fruit, can have positive effects on sleep and insomnia, especially in older adults.

“Even better, bananas also contain tryptophan, the sleep-regulating amino acid we discussed above.

“The magnesium in bananas also acts as a natural muscle relaxant, while potassium can be effective at treating restless leg syndrome.

“Add in a healthy dose of tryptophan, and bananas prove to be a triple threat for restful sleep.”
