How to get rid of gnats in plants and in your house

Gnats are basically a very small type of fly – including fruit flies – but that doesn’t stop them from being a pest.

They may swarm around in your garden, but if there’s moisture anywhere in your home, they may be attracted indoors.

Similarly, if you keep a lot of potted plants in your house, the dampness of the soil may be luring them in.

Whatever the case – it’s obviously not ideal to have large numbers of gnats wizzing about.

Here’s what you can do to get rid of them.

How to get rid of gnats in your home

One commonly-cited method for getting rid of gnats is to trap them using apple cider vinegar.

This well-known recipe requires apple cider vinegar, warm water, washing-up liquid and a bit of sugar. Simply mix these ingredients together in bowl or container, and leave it out.

The apple cider vinegar and sugariness of the mixture will attract the gnats, but it’s quite a sticky concoction to get out of. The trap will need changing every few days.

For those with plants, good houseplant care is a preventative method, hopefully curbing the gnats interest in your plants so you don’t need to trap the flies.

Plant-loving YouTuber Harli G recommends taking steps to ensure the soil is dry, as well as considering using sand or small pebbles over the top of the soil of the potted plant to stop flies from getting in.

But if the problem persists, these yellow sticky traps from Coochn should do the trick.

They’re shaped to sit easily in plant pots. There are also countless other sticky trap options available.

Fruit fly traps and sprays for houseplant bugs are also readily accessible to buy online.

All of the above should also be easy to find in DIY and gardening shops like your local B&Q and Homebase.
