How to get Iron Nuggets in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

It’s been a few days since the big launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and if you’ve got past the initial setting up stages on the island, you’ll likely be on the search for 30 Iron Nuggets to build the local shop.

Mining these takes a while, but there are a few tips and tricks to getting Iron Nuggets from boulders. Keep on reading to find out, or read here for the full review of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and find out why it might help your mental health.

How to get Iron Nuggets in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

To get Iron Nuggets, you’ll need some form of axe or shovel to use on any boulders on your island. You can hit these boulders several times, and they can spout out up to nine items, including Iron Nuggets as well as bugs, Bells, Stones and Clay. However, these boulders can break after numerous hits – especially if you’ve consumed some fruit.

Tips for mining boulders

When hitting boulders, you won’t get Iron Nuggets every single time, so you’ll need to maximise your chances. You’ll want to hit in quick succession, so make sure to use your shovel to dig several holes both behind you and to the side to avoid stumbling backwards when you hit the boulder – place yourself between the boulder and the holes you’ve dug.

Ensure to also not eat fruit, as you’ll break it much quicker and lose your chances of getting Iron Nuggets. Bolders reset each day, so you can only mine once per day.

Visiting other islands for Iron Nuggets

Unfortunately your island will only have so many boulders, so you’ll likely have to use a Nook Miles Ticket (which can be purchased from the Nook Stop Terminal, and costs 2,000 Nook Miles) to go to other islands to mine boulders on there. These islands are also great for getting other materials and new villagers to come to your community.

Other ways you get can Iron Nuggets

It will likely take a few days to get all 30 Iron Nuggets if you play as usual – but you can spawn boulders by changing the date on your Nintendo Switch.

Another way to get some Iron Nuggets is to talk to your villagers once you’ve agreed to gather the materials needed for the shop – one will give you a bundle of 5 to help you out.
