To get the mega discount, you’ll need to take advantage of an existing offer and the government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

Bargain hunter Jordon Cox, 23, spotted the absolute steal when sharing his cheap meal plans that lets you eat out for breakfast, lunch and dinner for £4.17 throughout August.

To get the first discount, you’ll need an old McDonald’s receipt.

The fast-food chain runs a scheme that lets you pick up a Big Mac and fries for £1.99 in exchange for filling out a survey about your meal.

How to calculate the bill

THE government will pay for half of your bill, up to £10 a head, when you eat out on certain days of the week in August.

To work out how much your bill will be after the discount is applied, you should start by adding together everything that you ordered.

You’ll then need to take off any items that it doesn’t cover, such as alcoholic drinks and the service charge.

Then, divide this by two to find out half of the bill.

What if it comes to more than £10 per head?

To check that it comes under the £10 per head cap, divide it again by the number of people who are dining.

If it works out as more than this per person, then you’ll need to multiply the number of people eating by £10.

You should then minus the answer from the total cost of the items that the discount can be applied to.

For example, four people eat out and the total bill that the discount can be applied to comes to £90.

Half of the bill would be £45, but that’s more than the limit.

So you need to minus £40 (£10 per diner) from £90 to get the amount you will need to pay, which in this case is £50.

Every time you buy food or drink at a Maccies restaurant you’ll be given a 12-digit unique code that you will need to enter into its Food for Thought website.

Once you’ve completed the survey, you’re given another five digit code that you will need to write on the original receipt.

Hand it over when you place your order at your next McDonald’s trip to pay the reduced price for your food.

If you order your meal on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday in August, you’ll also be eligible for half price food if you dine-in under the Eat Out to Help Out incentive.

This will knock 50 per cent off your meal, meaning your £1.99 Big Mac and fries will be slashed to just £1.

It’s well worth making the most of both offers because a Big Mac on it’s own under the scheme will still cost £1.60.

You’ll be spending 60p less and getting a side of fries if you stack the offers.

Usually, prices may vary depending on the branch, but the £1.99 receipt deal is available at all McDonald’s restaurants.

McDonald’s has confirmed the deal – but remember you won’t be able to get the half price discount on takeaways.

You also won’t be entitled to the government’s offer if you order on Thursday, Friday or over the weekend.

Everything on the menu is half price today as it’s the first day of the new Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

Brits have already rushed out to enjoy half price meals boasting of their bargain brekkies online.

Under the scheme, the government will pick up 50 per cent of the bill – up to £10 a head including children – when Brits eat in a registered restaurant, pub or cafe.

But keen foodies say they’ll go beyond the £10 cap by hopping between restaurants for each course.

It doesn’t include alcohol either but you can ask for leftovers to be taken home – here’s everything you need to know about the offer.

Thousands of high street chains and independent eateries have signed up to the scheme – use the postcode checker to find out where you can get the discount in your local area.
