Keen to do it? Let’s break it down for you.

This year, Christmas Day (December 25) falls on a Wednesday, meaning Boxing Day (December 26) and New Years Day (January 1) are on a Thursday and the following Wednesday.

So if your employer doesn’t require you to work bank holidays, you’ll automatically get those three days off.

This, in turn, means that if you also take December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 as annual leave, you’ll be off work for 12 days between December 21 and January 1.

When do the 2019 bank holidays fall around Christmas?

WITH a bit of planning you can double your holiday around Christmas. Here’s how it works:

Take five days off for a 12-day holiday.

  • Book off: December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31
  • Bank Holidays: December 25, 26, and January 1
  • Your holiday: December 21 – January 1

Take seven days off for a 16-day holiday.

  • Book off: December 23, 24, 27, 30, 31 and January 2 and 3.
  • Bank Holidays: December 25, 26, and January 1
  • Your holiday: December 21 – January 5

Alternatively, if you’re keen to be off even longer, you’ll get a sweet 16-day break by also booking off January 2 and 3.

Sadly, these plans only work if you’re on a normal shift pattern and get weekends and bank holidays off.

Your manager also has to approve any holiday requests before you jet off.

Often holiday is allocated on a first come, first served basis, so it’s worth getting your requests in early before your colleagues.

Full-time workers in the UK are entitled to 28 days paid leave a year, including bank holidays.

You can figure out how many days holiday you are entitled to by taking the amount of days a week you work and multiplying that number by 5.6.

Just make sure you ask your boss for permission first, as they can actually reject your holiday request even if you’ve already booked flights.

Brits can also get 32 days off work next year by taking just 15 days’ of annual leave.

If the price of your holiday drops after you book it then you can get it back.
