How Timo Werner impressed Frank Lampard during secret meeting

Timo Werner impressed Frank Lampard with his ‘driven but humble character’ during a secret meeting in Germany, reports claim.

Lampard, accompanied by former Chelsea team-mate and now technical and performance adviser at the club Petr Cech, travelled to Germany on an undercover mission to meet Werner and his father, who is also his agent.

Werner was left impressed by Chelsea’s efforts to sign him and has now agreed to sign a five-year deal worth £180,000-a-week after the Blues triggered his £53million release clause.

And Lampard was left equally impressed by Werner – who he thinks will help build a winning mentality at Stamford Bridge, according to The Telegraph.

The trip to Germany took place in February, during the mid-season break, but Lampard had long identified Werner as his priority target.

Indeed, enquiries were made about signing him in January but Werner was unwilling to leave Leipzig mid-season.

Liverpool were thought to be the favourites to sign him, with Jurgen Klopp holding multiple meetings with his compatriot, but it’s Lampard who, ultimately, won the race.

‘We’ve seen over the last couple of years that we trust Jurgen Klopp,’ Barnes said on behalf of bonuscodebets.co.uk.

‘If Jurgen Klopp wanted him, he would have got him, he would have demanded that they paid the money if he felt it was worth it.

‘If he doesn’t feel its worth it, whether it is money or whatever reason, then we don’t get him.

‘So, I think that had Liverpool wanted him, he would have gone to Liverpool rather than Chelsea.

‘I’m not saying that he’s not a good player, but Jurgen Klopp has taken a decision that he didn’t want him that badly in terms of the money that they were going to spend and we trust him.

‘We’re not going to feel that we’ve lost out to Chelsea, we would not have lost out to Chelsea had Jurgen Klopp wanted him badly enough.’
