How much Man Utd would have lost you had you backed them to win every league game this season

It’s no secret that Manchester United have endured a tough season, and their misery was compounded by a shock season-ending defeat by Cardiff on Sunday.

That 2-0 home loss against the relegated opponents was an acutely embarrassing way for United to close the book on this messy season.

The ‘honeymoon’ has long since ended for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the memory of that inspiring comeback win against Paris Saint-Germain has faded all too quickly.

United tailed off alarmingly in recent weeks, their Premier League campaign featuring few high moments as they limped to a sixth-place finish.

Manchester United endured a tough season

Their hopes of Champions League qualification were dashed by a draw at rock-bottom Huddersfield earlier this month, while Bluebirds winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing’s brace on Sunday stretched United’s winless run to six matches in all competitions.

And the betting stats over the season further highlight the miserable season United have endured, first under Jose Mourinho and then his replacement Solskjaer.

Figures released by Betway show that had you whacked £10 on United to win every week, you’d have finished the season £52 out of pocket.

Interestingly, had you backed them with the same amount to lose every game, you’d only have lost £20.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer waves to the fans following the defeat by Cardiff

The only way you’d have turned a profit this season by backing United is if you went for draws, with the return of that sitting at just £7.

So, what next for United? Now, Solskjaer has to rebuild, clearing out the unwanted from the dressing room, bringing in some fresh, younger and hungrier new faces and blooding some of the club’s own youngsters.

A season of transition awaits. United’s recent record in the transfer market, though, has not been good and they can ill-afford many more expensive flops.

This off-season will determine so much for the club – get it right and they could be back with an exciting young team. Get it wrong, though, and the club risks being simply left behind for years to come.
