Netflix has been reportedly testing a new price plan which would see subscriptions cost less than £3.

If these tests are successful there’s a chance that Netflix could roll out this price plan in the UK too.

These £2.99 subscriptions would mean users could only watch on mobile devices like tablets and phones, but at £3 cheaper than the streaming giant’s basic package, it’s still a banging bargain.

In the meantime, here’s a rundown of what Netflix currently costs and what we know about these trials…

How much does Netflix cost?

As it currently stands, Netflix costs from £5.99 for a basic plan which allows you to watch on one screen at a time in Standard Definition.

Their standard plan costs £8.99 a month and allows you and someone else with access to your account the opportunity to tune in to two screens at the same time, and in High Definition to boot.

The premium plan is the most expensive and costs £11.99. This gives you the ability to stream on four screens at the same time in HD and Ultra HD.

There’s been no official word yet as to when this new £2.99 price plan might come into effect in the UK, but by the end of last year, Netflix was trialling the new price plan in Indonesia, India and Malaysia.

‘In Q4, we launched a mobile-only plan in Malaysia and Indonesia (which we introduced to India in Q3 last year),’ the streaming giant said in a letter sent to shareholders.

‘We’ve seen similar results with this plan driving incremental subscriber growth and improving retention.

‘We expect the mobile-only plan to be revenue-positive which will allow us to further invest in content to be enjoyed by our members and continue to feed the virtuous cycle.

‘We plan to continue to test adding this plan, as well as additional ideas in other countries around the world.’
