Manchester United are refusing to give up on their hopes to sign Harry Kane, despite Tottenham’s insistence that they will not sell to a Premier League rival.

The 26-year-old gave the Red Devils encouragement over a move in March when he worded a thinly-veiled warning to Spurs that he will leave the club if they fail to match his ambition.

United are long-term admirers of Kane but they have a long history of fraught negotiatiations with Spurs and have long felt any move for the England captain would require him to hand in a transfer request to push through a move to the north-west.

Reports over the weekend claimed Spurs would accept a world record bid of £200m for Kane, as that would cover 20% of the club’s stadium costs in these testing financial times.

However, Spurs have since briefed that they would not consider selling Kane to a Premier League rival and they’re determined to hang on to the England captain.

Nevertheless, ESPN claim United are refusing to give up on their hopes of signing Kane and believe they still have a chance of landing the striker this summer due to his desire to win trophies.

Kane is yet to lift silverware at Tottenham and is fearful that the club are in transition again after Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking in December.

Jose Mourinho is understandably keen to keep Kane and would be loathed to strengthen former club Manchester United, particularly as they are rivals for a Champions League spot.

But the Portuguese has shown in the past that he’s willing to cash in on players if it means strengthening other areas of the squad, as he did with Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Inter Milan in 2008 and Juan Mata at Chelsea in 2014.
