How Man Utd will look as Ed Woodward authorises £125million summer rebuild

Ed Woodward is set to bankroll Manchester United in the summer, handing boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a £125million warchest to sign Thomas Muller and Kai Havertz.

Mirror Sport exclusively revealed the Red Devils have been keeping tabs on the German duo, watching Muller in action for Bayern Munich against Union Berlin and Havertz represent Bayer Leverkusen in their match with Werder Bremen.

Manchester United are in desperate need of a striker after parting company with Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the summer transfer window.

They have struggled in front of goal this campaign, and have identified 30-year-old Muller as the man to get them firing again.

Havertz, meanwhile, would provide Manchester United with the creativity they have been lacking in the middle of the park.

The Leverkusen wonderkid will set United back around £80million, but fits the bill for the type of player Solskjaer is looking to target.

Muller, who is a decade older than Havertz, doesn’t quite fit the bill, but would cost around £45million and would likely rotate with Anthony Martial.

Martial returned from injury for the Red Devils last time out in the Europa League, where he netted the only goal of the game in their win over Partizan Belgrade.

Solskjaer was happy with the way the Frenchman converted from the penalty spot, but was critical of all his strikers’ failure to defend.

The Red Devils boss told MUTV: “Second half I thought we dug in really well in the box, defended really well in the box.

“They played well in the second half and made us defend too deep.

“I’m not happy with the defending at the front. I think that’s been one of our strengths this season but I thought that was non-existent in the second half.

“That needs sorting out because we don’t want to be a team who is just defending in the box.”
