Manchester United are attempting to hijack Barcelona’s £120million move for Antoine Griezmann, according to reports.

French World Cup winner Griezmann has been one of the most prolific forwards in world football over the past five years, netting 133 goals in 257 league appearances for Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils have been linked with a move for Griezmann repeatedly since 2016 and remain interested in signing the striker this summer.

Griezmann, 28, is closing in on a move to Barcelona and is said to have agreed personal terms with the La Liga giants ahead of a switch which could be completed next week.

But The Sun say Manchester United remain undeterred and are trying to hijack the deal at the last-minute by warning Griezmann that he is Barcelona’s second-choice.

Barca have expressed interest in bringing Brazilian sensation Neymar back to the Nou Camp and are reportedly willing to offer Philippe Coutinho to PSG as part of the deal.

Manchester United have already signed Welsh winger Daniel James and star full back Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer but the club are under pressure to secure a marquee signing after a dismal season.

The Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enduring a shocking run towards the end of the campaign after briefly impressing following Jose Mourinho’s sacking.

Ed Woodward is also contending with the prospect of losing star midfielder Paul Pogba and striker Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United have reportedly revived their interest in Griezmann as a time when Woodward has promised more transfers.

In an email to United employees, Woodward said: ‘Despite the inflated nature of the transfer market and constant speculation and stories, which can be misleading, the recruitment team – in conjunction with the manager – are working calmly behind the scenes to bring in other exciting players that fit their long-term vision for the club.’

Wan-Bissaka became United’s second summer signing on Saturday. The young left back cost Manchester United an initial £45million.
