How Liverpool squad have reacted to Premier League shutdown and being denied record title win

The Liverpool squad are said to be hopeful uncertainty about the Premier League season continuing will be cleared up on Thursday, according to reports.

League chiefs are holding a crisis meeting to determine how to salvage a season that looks likely to be further suspended.

Club action has been halted until the start of April, but the UK government has warned the coronavirus threat will only increase in the next month.

After UEFA decided to postpone this summer’s European Championships, the Athletic claim players and staff at Liverpool are feeling uncertain about the future.

Liverpool are 25 points clear at the top of the league table and are within two wins of being crowned champions.

The Reds have never won the Premier League and it has been 30 years since they last won a top-flight title.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have fully supported the Premier League’s decision to suspend games, but the players are keen to learn what will happen next.

Melwood has been closed for the next two weeks and players have been told to stay home during a period that was meant to be the highlight of their season.

Each player has their own fitness regime supplied to them by the club and the playing and coaching staff have been warned the shutdown could be extended.

The squad are said to be feeling ‘surreal’ about the shutdown and the sudden halt in their march towards becoming champions.

There has been much debate about whether Liverpool should be handed the title if the season has to be cut short.

Opposition to that suggestion has been growing, but Premier League chiefs are hopeful of finishing the season this summer.

There has even been talk of playing the remaining 92 league games behind closed doors.
