How Harry Kane inspired stunning Tottenham comeback at Ajax with half-time rant

The injured England captain travelled with the squad despite his ankle ligament problem being several weeks away, and was in and around the dressing-room throughout the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Ajax.

And when he saw his side go two-goals down on the night – 3-0 on aggregate – he decided enough was enough.

Tottenham full-back Kieran Trippier revealed: “We’re all hoping he can be back for the final because of his presence.

“Even here at half-time, he’s coming in going mental at us because we can do better which we all knew.

“But this is what we need, the leadership that he has, the way he came in at half-time. He wasn’t happy and we all knew that.

“He just gives us that extra lift because his presence is massive for us. Harry is exceptional for club and country.”

Kane was in understandably high spirits after the game, and in the mixed zone afterwards expressed his desire to crack on with his rehabilitation with the June 1 final against Liverpool now only 22 days away.

Although he joked that with hat-trick hero Lucas Moura in such good form, he might not be able to get into the side.

He joined the rest of the players at Spurs Lodge when they finally got back to England in the early hours of the morning and manager Mauricio Pochettino gave his players the day off after their exertions in Amsterdam.

However, those nursing injuries reported to the club’s training ground for ongoing rehabilitation work, with Jan Vertonghen joining Kane after he was spotted leaving he Johan Cruyff Arena on crutches and wearing a boot.

Very much in the wars, despite wearing a protective mask he completed the game and Spurs were adamant that his injury had nothing to do with him taking part in the exuberant celebrations on the final whistle.

Instead, it was reported that he had picked up a knock on his ankle ligament in the first half and it was standard procedure at the club to travel with a surgical boot in such circumstances. Medical staff will know more about his long-term prognosis but were encouraged by the fact he was able to complete the match.

Indeed, Pochettino must now decide how to manage the entire squad between the end of Sunday’s game against Everton and the Champions League final 20 days’ later.

It is possible he will give his tired players a much-needed extended break from the game in order to recharge their batteries.
