How forgotten Liverpool goalkeeper helped Jurgen Klopp sign Alisson

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was destined to become a cult hero at Anfield, according to former Reds stopper Alexander Doni.

Doni, who made four Premier League appearances during a two-year spell with Liverpool , spotted his compatriot playing for Brazilian side Internacional early in his career.

Alisson, 26, eventually made the move to Europe in 2016, impressing in two years with Italian outfit Roma, before making a £67million switch to Anfield last summer.

The Brazil No.1 has made an immediate impression, keeping 21 clean sheets as Jurgen Klopp’s side narrowly missed out on the league title and also playing a key role in their Champions League triumph.

And Doni, who maintained a close relationship with long-time goalkeeping coach John Achterberg after leaving Liverpool in 2013, has recalled the moment he first came across his fellow keeper.

“Yes, when I saw him play, I immediately recommended him to John and tried to get him signed,” Doni told Liverpoolfc.com .

Doni has also been impressed with how quickly Alisson has settled in England and believes he was integral to Liverpool’s success last season.

When asked if Klopp boasts world football’s best goalkeeper, he said: “Yes, without a doubt.

“I am very impressed with how quick he was able to adapt to the way the Premier League is played and how quick he obtained success in England.

“This only shows what a great player and person he is.

“Besides being an overall complete player, I really like how he is able to maintain calm and control.”
