How Diego Simeone reacted to Antoine Griezmann's Atletico Madrid departure

Atletico Madrid have been left with a huge hole to fill after Antoine Griezmann announced his intention to leave the club this summer.

The French World Cup winner is set to link up with Barcelona after a video was released to supporters on Tuesday night confirming him imminent departure.

Griezmann, who decided to stay in the Spanish capital last summer amid interest from the Nou Camp, held a meeting with manager Diego Simeone and CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin on Tuesday to inform them of his decision.

It came after Simeone had been vocal about his belief that their star man would stay put at the Wanda Metropolitano despite speculation over his future.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has now opened up on Simeone’s response to the news Griezmann will be leaving his side.

Diego Simeone will have to deal with life without Antoine Griezmann next season

“Simeone is disappointed, like the others,” Cerezo told COPE’s ‘El Partidazo’ radio show.

“He was determined to leave and there was no chance of convincing him.

“I don’t know or care [who Griezmann’s next team will be]. But when a team wants to pay a release clause, it’s normal to communicate and we haven’t received any messages from anyone just yet.

“Wherever he goes, I hope that he is treated the same as he was here… and good luck!”

Simeone is facing a big summer with several key players set to depart

Whilst Cerezo insists they have yet to receive a formal offer to meet Griezmann’s release clause, it is expected Barcelona will act when a clause in his contract sees the figure drop from €200m to €120m on July 1.

Simeone is facing a big summer with Griezmann not the only big-name departure.

Lucas Hernandez has already agreed to join Bayern Munich, whilst experienced club captain Diego Godin is also leaving the Wanda Metropolitano.
