At last night’s SAG awards Brad and Jen, Hollywood’s most written about exes, met and shared a very public display of affection setting the internet ablaze as we all thought the same thing: could this possibly mean that at last they are about to get their fairytale happy ending.
When Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were set up by their agents in 1998, it was the ultimate Hollywood romance of the noughties. He was the movie star whose six pack sold out cinemas and she was the girl next door and America’s sweetheart as Rachel in Friends.
They tied the knot in a lavish Malibu ceremony in July 2000 with 200 guests and 50,0000 flowers that was swarmed by paparazzi in helicopters. He made a cameo on Friends, she spoke of her desire to start a family and they had matching red-carpet looks (lots of cargo pants and chokers).
But then, along came Angelina Jolie. In 2004, on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith, there were reports of a sizzling sexual chemistry between her and co-star Brad. In quick succession, Brad and Jen announced their separation and by April 2005, he was pictured on a beach with Jolie, playing dad to her son Maddox – and ‘Brangelina’ was born.
However, the celebrity gossip columns never let their hopes of a Brad ‘n’ Jen reunion fade, and last night we saw a new chapter written in their never-ending saga when the two met face to face.
Papped at the SAG awards, the former golden couple were seen sharing warm words and an almost-embrace backstage at the ceremony. Another photo showed Aniston gently touching Pitt’s chest and him seeming to hold onto her hand for just a split second after she went to leave.
Sure, for most people this is just a sign that the duo are firmly in ‘friendly-ex territory’. But, for the internet’s most hopeful romantics, the picture is proof that a reunion is on the cards. The speculation began with Brad accepting his award onstage for Outstanding Performance by a Male actor in a Supporting role for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
‘I’ve got to add this to my Tinder profile,’ he joked upon accepting the award. Pitt even got in a dig at ex-wife Angelina Jolie, saying: ‘Let’s be honest, it was a difficult part. The guy who gets high, takes his shirt off, and doesn’t get on with his wife. It’s a big stretch. Big.’ Yikes! Interestingly Jen once famously described Brad as ‘missing a sensitivity chip’ in her tell-all breakup interview with Vanity Fair back in September 2005.
The cameras captured Jennifer gazing lovingly and clapping at the quip. Brad was also spotted backstage saying: ‘oh wow’ as he watched Jen accept her SAG Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her turn in The Morning Show (in a slinky vintage Dior by John Galliano gown direct from her own closet). It seems the former golden couple have now moved on and are enjoying a mutually supportive relationship – maybe it’s time we moved on too.
But before we establish closure, let’s remember Brad and Jen’s most golden moments.
