Houghton Festival has been cancelled due to bad weather less than 24 hours after poor weather forced Boardmasters to also shut.

The Norfolk techno festival was forced to shut after weather warnings from the Met Office predicted forecasting thunderstorms, heavy rain and wind speeds of 40MPH.

In a statement made on Facebook, the festival’s directors expressed their disappointment at the news but clarified that cancelling was their only option while warning ticket holders not to travel to the site.

‘We are utterly devastated. All the hard work, love and creativity that has gone into planning and producing this year’s event made this an almost impossible decision to make,’ they wrote.

‘This was set to be a wonderful weekend and the boldest step we have ever taken as a festival.

‘However, nothing is more important than the safety of our customers, staff and performers, which would be compromised if we were to go ahead.

‘Please understand that this decision has been made with the deepest of consideration,’ they concluded.

Hosted by DJ Craig Richards at stately manor Houghton Hall, the four-day electronic event was due to start this morning, with many festival goers and members of staff only hearing the news as they reached the venue.

In its third year, Houghton’s line-up this year featured electronic giants Four Tet, Ben UFO and Hunee.

Information regarding ticket refunds is expected to be announced later today, but many fans felt that the news could have been predicted earlier.

This week’s bad weather has plagued the festival season, after Cornwall festival Boardmasters was forced to cancel due to poor weather.

The waterside festival, which mixes music with surfing, was due to play host to 50,000 campers and live performances from the likes of Foals, Florence and the Machine and Wu-Tang Clan.

As with Houghton, music fans said that they felt let down by the last minute cancellation of the event, with one festival goer telling Metro.co.uk that he’d spent £400 on Boardmasters.
