Hotel secrets: Never ask this one question if you want your hotel room upgraded for free

Hotel stays see travellers freed from household chores as they are looked after by staff and enjoy their holiday. Hotels vary greatly in price and quality and bagging a bargain is always preferable. Some Britons hope they can get their hands on an upgrade for their hotel room – but this can be tricky.

However, there’s one question you should never ask a hotel concierge.

Kelso explained you should not ask the concierge for an upgrade unless you’ve already established a personal rapport with them.

Requesting a free upgrade out of the blue is unlikely to work and is considered presumptuous.

However, there is a sneaky way you can up your odds of nabbing an upgrade for free – although it might surprise you.

DON’T MISS

Kelso suggests asking the hotel concierge if you could pay for an upgrade.

By offering to part with money you will show goodwill which could improve your standing with the concierge.

According to Kelso, this may result in your being bumped up for free.

At the very least, if you ask if you can pay for a free upgrade the concierge will let you know your options.

He explained that no matter whether you want to know about a celebrity or a friend, they can’t give out information about other guests.

This is because the information is privileged and the concierge will be put in an awkward position by you asking.

Another tip to getting a hotel upgrade is to check in later in the day as there’s a chance the hotel might have run out of standard rooms.

Cancellations and no-shows are also more likely toward the end of the day, too, which will free up rooms.
