Hotel secrets: Insider reveals wearing this item can get you a free room upgrade

Hotel stays can be as cheap or expensive as holidaymakers like, depending on their budget. Those hoping to save the pennies might not want to splurge too much. Consequently bagging an upgrade is much sought-after – a superior room without the higher price tag.

Klair explained that a shiny wedding ring could herald an upgrade.

The item of jewellery suggests the couple are newlyweds and therefore celebrating.

In turn, this suggests they’re more likely to spend more at the hotel.

“From personal experience, I think newlyweds or people celebrating a particular occasion will receive ‘special treatment’ over others,” Klair told Express.co.uk.

DON’T MISS

“This is because they’re potentially prone to spending more at the hotel if they’re celebrating and therefore will react even more positively to a room upgrade.”

A newly married couple will probably indulge in more treats than those simply enjoying a normal holiday.

This is known throughout the hospitality industry, Klair said.

He explained: “It’s known amongst the hotel staff that people who are celebrating an occasion will indulge themselves more with luxury items, such as spending a bit extra on a meal or buying an extra bottle of champagne.

“So, to encourage this increased spending a bit more, we typically will offer an upgrade. It gives them the aura of having an even more expensive and affluent experience.

“Furthermore, we can’t necessarily decipher whether a couple is actually married.

“We see a shiny ring or a special request saying they’re celebrating their wedding or occasion and we will jump on the opportunity to offer them the best.”

If you’re not married or engaged (or don’t fancy pretending to be) there are other ways to get a free room upgrade.

Klair advises making the most if hotel reward programmes. “They are always a really good and easy way to earn an upgrade if you know you’re going to be staying with a particular hotel chain a lot,” he said.

“More often or not they’re free and easy to sign up to.

“Typically, people who sign up to hotel reward programmes will be targeted more with discounts and offers because the hotel knows that the person has enjoyed their stay and are more willing to go back there.”
