'Honesty bombing' is the new dating trend that's come out of lockdown

For over a year we’ve been cooped up at home, with very limited social interactions, only talking to people over Zoom or via text.

Now lockdown is finally easing and we’re now able to enjoy food and drinks outside with other people once again. Hurrah!

But will the coronavirus pandemic have changed anything about the way we date?

According to the dating app, Badoo, there is going to be one big difference with post-pandemic romance.

The experts there claim a new dating trend is coming, known as ‘honesty bombing’, as people are ready to be more honest and upfront than ever before.

They claim 72 per cent of singletons are more willing to share who they are and what they really want from a relationship than they were pre-Covid.

While a whopping 82 per cent are ready to be more open and honest on a first date in order to speed along the ‘getting to know each other’ process – talking about everything from mental health to marriage.

A lot of people (69%) are feeling done with playing games or playing ‘hard to get’ as they say lockdown has shown them the importance of just being themselves.

People are emerging from this period, after losing a year of dating, interested in finding a serious partner, with two in three even admitting what they are looking for in a person has changed since this time last year.

Enter Honesty Bombing – a term coined by Badoo, meaning to be your true, honest self, straight away when meeting someone, to not waste any more time post-lockdown and weed out who’s not going to be a suitable partner in the early dating stages.

A crucial reason for this new trend is that time is well and truly of the essence – overall, 75 per cent of people feel more conscious of wasting time dating the wrong person than they were before the pandemic.

Natasha Briefel, UK Brand Marketing Director at Badoo UK says: “Thanks to online dating, people have been able to continue making connections throughout lockdown and they’ve had the time to really think about what they want in a partner.

“As IRL dating returns, one of the biggest positive impacts from the pandemic we expect to see is people being much more open and honest with who they are and what they want from a relationship.

“Not only that, but also in terms of the simple things that help to move relationships forward, such as telling someone you like them, or being upfront about why you might not want to see someone again.

“Honesty is so important when it comes to dating, online or IRL, and at Badoo we believe everyone should be unapologetically themselves, and be kind whilst doing so – Honesty Bombing is a real positive to come out of the pandemic and something that we hope all daters take in their stride.”
