Homeland’s final season release date has been pushed back for early 2020.

The government thriller has been off air for nearly two years, but despite this US network Showtime has decided to hold off so fans…get ready for February.

It was confirmed in August 2018 that the Claire Danes-fronted series will be ending at the end of the eighth season, and is currently being shot in Morocco.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association on Friday, Showtime president Gary Levine said [via Hollywood Reporter: ‘Homeland is an ambitious series, especially in its final season. Alex wants to go out proudly, and he’s going to.

‘That has involved production in multiple countries and at times in places that have some issues.

‘It just takes time. There have been no missteps here; it’s been a relatively smooth process but a very ambitious production schedule that has taken more time than we thought it would.

‘One of the things that we do at Showtime [is a strategy that] we’d rather have it good than fast.’

The show originally started as a cat-and-mouse mystery which followed Danes’ CIA officer Carrie Mathison questioning whether former prisoner of war Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) had actually been turned to an agent for al-Qaeda.

However, when Damien Lewis pulled out of the series at the end of the third round, the show developed in a new direction.

Mandy Patinkin, who plays Saul on the show, will return for the next series, having been promoted to a national security advisor.

President Warner, played by Beau Bridges, is dealing with attempts to end the war in Afghanistan, sending Saul to negotiate with the Taliban.

Can they make it out alive one last time?

Homeland airs on Channel 4 in the UK.
