GIVING birth at home is as safe as in hospital, an international study suggests.
There was no difference in infant death rates, according to analysis of a million cases in eight countries, including England.
The findings should offer reassurance for mums unsure on where to have their babies, say the researchers.
Gynaecologist Professor Eileen Hutton said: “More women in well-resourced countries are choosing birth at home but concerns have persisted about their safety.
“This clearly demonstrates the risk is no different when the birth is to be at home or in hospital.”
Home birth rates have dipped amid safety fears, in particular for first-time mothers.
Duchess of Sussex Meghan wanted one but had baby Archie in hospital.
The Canadian researchers analysed 21 studies since 1990.
They examined the safety of place of birth by reporting on the risk of death within the first four weeks.
The risk was less than one percent in both groups.
Two per cent of UK births are at home.
