With a travel announcement expected by the government later today, autumn and winter holidays are on our minds.

Some reports say the green and amber lists will merge into one category of low-risk nations and the number of places on the red list will be reduced.

Not surprisingly, this is great news for prospective British holidaymakers.

If you are one of the thousands who wish to avoid the heavy traffic of summer breaks, then you may well be looking at October and November for your break away in the sun.

But where is hot to travel to in autumn and winter?

Thankfully, there is quite a substantial list. From European city breaks to island havens, we are not short of choice.

And to guide you on your late-year trip, we have put together a list of the hottest destinations to travel to in the months to come.

Costa Del Sol

Beloved by British holidaymakers, the Costa Del Sol region of Spain is one of the safest bets when it comes to autumn holidays. During October the average temperature in popular Marbella is 22ºC which cools to 12ºC at night time. Meanwhile, the sea temperature is a lovely 21ºC.

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are one of the few destinations that guarantee warm and sunny weather all year round. For travel in autumn and winter, you have your pick of sun-showered havens. Top picks for travellers are Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria where temperatures reach the low to mid-twenties from October to December.

Cyprus

Located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus is a popular spot for those looking for white sandy beaches and crystal clear seas. And thankfully, it remains a relatively hot holiday destination to travel to in autumn and winter. The average winter temperature in November is 22ºC and from December to February, the median temperature is 18ºC. However, late winter is the island’s rainiest period, so get those flights booked for as early as possible.

Algarve

It’s been said that the best time to visit the Algarve is outside of peak season. Smaller crowds make it the ideal time to explore all the region has to offer and temperatures in autumn and winter stay warm. During October the average is 22ºC, while from November onwards highs range from 17°C – 19°C. Rain can be expected at times, but if you prefer to feel the warmth on your bones then the Algarve is for you.

Cancun

If you wish to holiday further afield, you have an endless choice when it comes to hot destinations to travel to in autumn and winter. And Cancun in Mexico is just one of them. December through April is the best time to book, with January to March being the absolute peak time for fantastic weather. So if you are already dreading the post-Christmas blues, book a flight now.

Rome

If you prefer a warm city break rather than hitting the pool, have you thought about Rome? The Italian capital is beautiful in October as the evening light shadows the city’s architecture. The average temperature during Halloween month is 21.4°C in October. This then drops to a moderate 15.9°C in November.

Madeira

Like the Canary Islands, Madeira’s position off the west coast of Africa means a subtropical climate year-round. The average high in November is 21°C with a low of 17°C. Madeira is also famous for the wine that bears its name, so with good wine and warm weather, what are you waiting for?
