The birthplace of rum, Barbados offers something for everyone. Discover the Mount Gay distillery, founded in 1703, making it the oldest commercial rum distillery in the world. Take a tour to discover the secrets and mysteries behind the island’s most celebrated spirit, and of course a tipple or two.
A lively nightlife scene can be found in the south. Oistins, a colourful fishing town, is famous for its fish fry on Friday nights. People come from all over the island to sample the fresh fish, chicken and lobster grilled on huge outdoor barbecues.
You can also swim with leatherback and hawksbill turtles, watch green monkeys munching on sticks of sugar cane and hear the calls of tiny, translucent whistling frogs. One of the best places to experience all this and more is at Barbados’ Wildlife Reserve. Here you can also explore the limestone stalactites and stalagmites of Harrison’s Cave and wander through the many world-class botanical gardens.
For a more relaxing holiday, head west to the Platinum Coast, where you’ll find the whitest sands and crystal-clear waters. Here the coral reefs offer amazing snorkelling and scuba diving experiences. The east coast is best for surfing thanks to the strong winds and rocky shores. When you’re off exploring, look out for the curious caves and underground lakes.
The best time to travel is from December to April. With temperatures reaching the low 30’s, they are the driest and least humid months.
